Peter Thornley BDS MFGDP MGDS FFGDP
Peter is currently the Post-Graduate Education Tutor for the Heart of Birmingham PCT. He has wide experience teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, nationally and internationally. He is a General Dental Practitioner in a successful mixed Private/NHS practice in Sutton Coldfield, which he set up in partnership with his wife Alison in 1994. The practice was one of the first in the country to complete the BDA “Good Practice” scheme and Peter is now an assessor for the scheme and has completed the Faculty of General Dental Practice certificate in Practice Appraisal.
Peter has mentored and trained both Dental Care Professionals and Dentists. One of his proudest achievements is that a colleague who joined his practice as a trainee dental nurse has progressed along the training pathway and is now in her third year studying dentistry at Birmingham University. For several years he was the Divsional Diploma Tutor of the very successful West Midlands MFGDP study group, which consistently produced more successful candidates than any other division. He also teaches on the West Midlands Vocational Dental Practitioners programme and on the Birmingham and Warwick University MSc programmes in General Dental Practice and Implant Dentistry. He is an assessor for the Fellowship of the Faculty of General Dental Practice and has just been appointed Chief Examiner for the MFGDP at the Royal College of Surgeons in London.
He has an interest in Research and was the winner of the British Society of Prosthetic Dentistry/Steradent prize for an audit project and the BDA Shirley Glastone Hughes prize for research in General Dental Practice. He has published original research in Primary Dental Care and the British Dental Journal and has contributed articles to Dental Practice, Dental Update, Private Dentistry and First Hand magazines. He has a special interest in orthodontics and has been a hospital practitioner in orthodontics for more than 10 years.
He has been involved in the induction programme for overseas dentists and has lectured in England and Wales on numerous section 63 courses. Subjects taught include:
